I was thinking today that my Twitter account (@blockheadnyc) might be a shock to the system for some of my more casual fans. If you only know about me through my instrumental albums or work with rappers, I suppose you’d expect my twitter activity to be fairly somber , if not downright depressing.
Instead, I like to use it as a platform to make jokes (as well as promote my music and this blog). The problem is, I forget that lots of people don’t want to hear jokes form a semi-obscure underground hip hop producer. So, I’m asking you for your thoughts. Please answer the poll honestly. I’m curious to see what’s what about this whole situation. It’s kind of a twitter report card of sorts. Keep in mind, I have no intention of changing my ways but it’s nice to know where peoples heads are at…
Those Sarah McLaughlin tweets a while back were pure gold
This must be an ego boost
More of a justification thus far. i woulda felt like a total dickhead had this gone the other way.
I remember “Sweeping Generalizations with Blockhead” way back when always had me dyin in class. That being said, I think you should twitter about whatever the fuck you feel like twittering about.
I with this guy. 90% on the above question ,fuck yea!
How long ago did u start the sweeping generalizations, i feel like ive reading it forever.Started reading it on Defjux.
I actually started it all on my personal myspace page back in the mid 2000′s. maybe 2003 or 4?
Damn its been that long…i was like 19/20.Sounds about right tho ,time wise.
no need for taking twitter TOO seriously. so I’m with Jt on this one
I’ve been following you on twitter for a while now. I think I would just stop using it if you, Tim and Eric, and SirJarlsburg stopped tweeting. Its like Trending Topics daily.
Keep it going! @illpayne on twitter
Been following you for a min. Your humor is hit or miss on Twitter but your blog is a better fit to catch you at your best. Either way. Dont change shit, unless you want to read some of your unknown followers tl’s and reply to them or just post some shit on there. Consider it team building.
WHAT?!?!?! HOW DARE YOU!!! FUCK YOUUUUUUUUU!!!!!
Just kidding. I like the constructive criticism.
your tweets consistently make my day, every day. and yeah, i’m with Chris R i think “where my dogs at? (in heaven)” every time i see an SPCA advert and chuckle evilly.
Technically speaking you should use twitter as a mechanism to broadcast blog posts, album sales, single releases, promos, concerts. The broadcast should generate interest and drive traffic to your blog or whatever you want to use to provide more information to your audience. Because you can’t just spam people, you are supposed to mix in informational or related information to validate your position in your niche market. In your exact position you have already validated your ‘status’ through album releases/sales which means that you should use twitter to show your personality or allow your listeners to identify themselves with you.
Obviously you can blog and tweet about whatever you want. Lately you have been tipping the scale towards the personal side. At first it was cool because most artists are not this open with their fan base. But once you get over the novelty of it all, I start to question why I care about your opinion about something completely unrelated to your music.
With that said, when you stick to music all of your content is damn near eye opening. I remember that blog post talking about Digital Underground and their track The Return of the crazy one. That made me scratch my head and wonder why I skipped over it. But attention to detail like that should be expected since that is what you are an expert in.
Thanks for putting out this question and for reading my long winded response. Obviously you are doing something right.
Word. I see what you’re saying.
In my defense, when I have shit to promote (be it new releases or shows), I will certainly be promoting it on twitter. At the moment, I’m working on shit but I got nothing to push. Tons of shows coming up in november ect…
no doubt, following the ‘rules’ is tough. finding content but then scheduling content is extremely tough.
I have no idea what your thoughts are on spotify especially being an artist. But creating a public playlist and sharing them would be hot. But I get it, you work with music all the time and you want to use your blog as a release. But damn opening up playlists, I’ve got random MF Doom instrumental playlists, random ‘old school’ crate digging playlists, basically trying to limit playlists to 12 tracks and finding what works. Would be nice to see what someone who actually knows music could come up with, instead of me: a wanna be dj.
I’m not even on spotify. It sounds interesting but I still use my ipod/itunes. I’m super particular and a lot of the music I listen to isn’t readily available. I’d be shocked if most of it was even on spotify.
social music services are trending right now. you probably right with some of your music. anyway if you get bored, and need an invite for yourself or anyone else let me know
i cant belive it this guy is still trying to promote his fucking software….
i voted in the poll for “i’m ‘meh’ on the jokes but i wish you would post more about music”. i voted for it because it was the most accurate choice but i wouldnt say i’m “meh” towards the joking. its definitely entertaining, and if it was all music talk and you only used it to keep fans updated on shows and stuff it’d be boring, but im just saying more music stuff would be cool. its just that since your fans are fans of your music above fans of your comedy, they’d be more likely to check your twitter if it was updating them on that.
I appreciate your honesty. And, like I said to the dude earlier, when I have more music to promote, I’ll surely be using Twitter to promote it. I’ll be touring in the fall and releasing lots of stuff in the winter so hopefully it’ll balance everything out.
Im with the first option, keep it up, its hilarious and thanks for answering my question about the sound guy.
You should get a second twitter account, call it @sadBlockhead and just turn it into a depressed, emo character talkin’ about thunderstorms and dying clowns.
Where’s the; I assumed these tweets were written by Adam Corrola, option?
I don’t have a Twitter but I’d definetly hit spotify up sounds pretty damn cool, if the obscure music is available.
I, actually, wish you’d tweet more often. Nothing like reading dookie jokes while I’m sitting on the shitter.
I’ve actually thought about this before. When I first listened to Uncle Tony’s coloring book I though I’d never see Blockhead live because it seemed like the music was made during some kind of lonely downward spiral by someone who never wants to be seen. After meeting you, finding the blog and laughing/not laughing at all the jokes I feel like the blog and facebook only give the music more personality and makes it more approachable.
I say keep it up. The number of “likes” I’ve thrown your way on facebook is almost embarassing…
Don’t stop, Block!! Even my boyfriend, who is all “anti-social media boy”greatly enjoys when I read your tweets to him. He was a big fan of the tweet re: farting in front of your girl is a great argument for monogamy. Keep on keepin’ on….but remember – don’t stop making music b/c that’s why we like you in the first place!
I do like that you make jokes and do find your twitter stylings to be entertaining but I just wish you would talk more about when your next studio album comes out. In all serioussness though take your time, true art shouldn’t be rushed. any chance of getting any unreleased instrumentals from you? mainly the track ‘no regrets’? grantbernard@hotmail.com
No unreleased instrumentals are gonna drop. We don’t even have versions of those old beats anymore. They were made before we used pro-tools.
I FUCKS WITH YOUR TWITTER B, I FREQUENTLY CHUCKLE AND SOMETIMES GUFFAW, KEEP IT UP MY NIGGA. ALSO PLEASE CONTINUE TO RT ME HEAVY SO ALL YOUR FANS WILL BECOME MERO FANS ON SOME FAN TRIZZ SHIT NO HOMO
No doubt. You’re pretty much the only person I ever retweet.
I JUST WISH YOU WEREN’T SUCH A WOMAN.
