Demo reviews Vol. 14

What’s up everyone?
I’m back again with more reviews of demos you sent me. Before you ask “where/when can i send my demo!?!?!” let me clarify that I’m not accepting submissions right now. I won’t be for a while (still waiting for this current batch to run out) but , when i am, I’ll certainly announce it.
Anyway, as a refresher of what this is…People send me demo’s, I give my honest opinion on them and then rate them on these categories:

As I stress every time, I’m just one man with opinions. What i say isn’t law. So, if I didn’t like your demo, don’t go hang yourself or quit music (unless it was so bad that I said you should). Just take it as constructive criticism. After all, what do i know? I’m just some dude you don’t know in real life. It’s not that serious.
Okay? cool.

Artist:Supanova Helix
Song:Word up
I’m kinda torn on this one. One one hand, he says some clever shit and his flow is pretty good. On the other, there something very amateur about the whole thing. Not just the shitty recording quality but like the rapper sounds pretty wet behind the ears to me. I dunno…maybe it’s the “raps complaining about rap” thing. Regardless, it’s the type of song that shows more potential than anything. The beat is neither here nor there. Definitely needs to step it up on the recording quality tip though.

song: Blunts and bacon

This isn’t bad at all but I had pretty high hopes for a song called “Blunts and Bacon”.
This is actually pretty good. It’s a well crafted song with some good raps and even a decent hook. To be honest, the thing that jumped out to me the most was the dope vibraphone chop on the hook. Loved that shit.
While this may not be something that i’d come back to a bunch of times it’s certainly a very strong demo.

Song: Find my way

Woah, did someone send me a R&B song? That’s new.
Well, I’m not much of an R&B head but, then again, I’d sooner listen to some R&B than I would instrumental stuff so I suppose reviewing this isn’t that far out of my comfort zone.
Anyway, this is okay. I mean, the song/lyrics are pretty typical R&B fare. The only difference is the production is a little outside the box of what you might consider the average R&B song. The singer is ALMOST really good. A few flat notes peppered in aren’t a good look but, for the most part, she does her thing.

Song: Kinkonk
Ughh…I’m way to old for this kinda shit. This sounds to me like the natural progression from rap/rock into dupstep/rap. I kept waiting to hear someone yell “Break something!”. That said, for what it is, it is well made. I just never ever wanna hear anything remotely like this ever.

Song:Was made to kick around

I truly have no clue what i just listened to. I don’t even mean that in a bad way. I mean like I’m trying to figure out when the right time to listen to a song like this would be? Running through a castle in the 30’s?
So, on the bright side, this is certainly interesting. It’s just kinda without aim. I’m all for people not adhering to genre and labels but the music has to make sense in some fashion.

Artist:Samuel Nordstrom
Song:Funky Friday
Is this like Nu-lounge? is that a thing?
Not to read too much into the artist and song name but this shit is extremely european to me.
It’s pretty typical, inoffensive background music for people who don’t really like music that much. On the bright side, there is a place in the world for this kinda stuff and it’s every hotel lobby on earth.

Song:Going World Wide

This beat is pretty dope. Very simple but it hits in a very satisfying way. In that Jay-z “who you wit” kinda way.

The rapping could not be more average. He’s not bad and he’s got swag (whatever the fuck that means) but it’s pretty uninteresting in general. I feel like this is a kid taking song crafting cues from the right people (older Kanye comes to mind) but he hasn’t really found an original voice just yet. It remains to be seen if he ever will though cause i get the feeling striving for originality isn’t his number one concern.

Song: Unmixed random beat

I was gonna just not even post this one but I think this needs to be addressed.
This is a forum for me to review songs, not that thing you made in an hour while high the night before. I mean, I can deal with some low fi amateur shit…but when i get stuff like this I can’t even fathom what the person who sent it was thinking.
Oh, and to review it? Who cares. it’s not a song. It’s a beat with weak drums that has a few subtle changes.
Heads up to anyone who sends me shit like this in the future: I’m not reviewing it. At least, have a title for your “song”. That’s all i ask.

Artist: Desmond Cheese
Song: Swampy

This took an unexpected turn. It started out as some ambient shit I assumed would flip into something more heavy. That seemed like the logical way to go with that whole intro. But the drums and bass come in and it was just…strange. It reminded me of the beginning of “Black velvet” by Allanah Miles.

Strange. Also, not particularly in my wheelhouse. This could be someone else’s shit though…it’s just not mine.

Song: Mission Statement

This is one of those songs I like better on paper than in real life. All the parts work. The beat is cool, the rapper is on point. The song structure is even interesting. But, with all that, I didn’t want to really sit through the whole thing. But, to be fair, that’s more my issues and patience than anything. Overall, this is pretty strong and I could actually see people who are fans of the rap I’ve worked on over the years really digging this one.

Artist: MakCheese Feat:Artezeus and Wilful
Song: Flame On

Woah, what’s up multicultural rap!
As I’ve covered on here before, I got some issues with rappers with accents. They just rarely work for me. Add on someone rapping in a language I don’t understand and you’ve lost me. So, basically, this song makes no sense to me. The rapping is…well…foreign. The beat is pretty half assed as well.

    • That’s cause I’m not giving you a place to right now. read the first paragraph of this article. When I need more demos, I’ll let people know and let them know where to send them to.

      • ooops, i read that, but it just didn’t process to me that the place to send them would change in between reviews. now i feel sheepish.

  1. Your evil mastermind friend here, just curious, how much further down the cue is our little “guess which dipshit friend made this demo” game?

      • Lame, don’t guess until the official review time though. Let’s keep this classy

      • Maybe I’ll spell it out to you during a game of WWF’s.
Don’t worry though…I don’t remember which one was yours so I’ll have no clue when I’m reviewing it.

  2. “Yotz:Was made to kick around” could really be something if it was better mastered and well…if the snare would be swapped for something more fitting.

  3. Thanks for giving me the visual of dudes running through a castle to that Yotz song. I have the most badass image of two dudes running down a hallway slow-motion slicing off the heads of guards with big ol’ swords during the do-do-do part. It’s epic in my head.
