Demo reviews Vol. 47

Hello and welcome to another edition of “Demo reviews”. This is where readers send me songs for me to give my honest opinion on. Generally, it ain’t great for either of us.
I’m not accepting submissions right now so, PLEASE stop sending me demos. When it’s that time, I will let it be known.
The reviews work as so:
I write a paragraph of my thought on the track and then arbitrarily rate them from 1-10 in these categories:

Can’t stress enough how unimportant they number ratings are but I know people like to be quantified so I give them what they want.
Let’s check this weeks crop, shall we?

Artist: Hoot
Song:What do you do

This sounds like a really good album intro or the start of something very interesting. My issue is that I kept waiting for it to go somewhere. Like some drums dropping in or expanding past the original little organ riff. I like it but I feel like it’s a missed opportunity at something far more interesting. It’s a building track that never builds. That said, I was into all the sounds he used and the mood of the whole thing.

Artist: Jonny Reason
Song: Maybe Blind

So very emotional. I picture this being recorded in a dark room, lit only by candles with photos of all his dead loved ones on the wall. It’s well put together but it’s just corny to me. The piano riff is like a pretty basic “emotional feeling” setting on a casio keyboard and the rap/singing was kinda cringeworthy. Which is too bad cause he can both sing and rap adequately. It’s more just a matter of personal taste in terms of this sort of song but…yeah…this kinda thing is my nightmare. It kinda falls somewhere between a rap/rock ballad and Rapping Bruce Hornsby.

Artist: Tsoma
Song: Big Papa Trill

Hmm…At first i was like “oh great, another terrible joke demo sent in that’s gonna get a lot of votes from assholes” but this is actually a real song. The intro is a touch self indulgent (in the sense that literally no one will wanna ever hear it more than once). The beat that comes in is cute and strange but then the terrible joke rapping starts and it totally falls apart. I give it weird points though.

Artist: Matt Black
Song: Champloo

I’m partially expecting someone to point out that this beat is some famous artists beat that got lifted. If not, good job. It’s a really good. If it is someone else’s, you’re a dick who doesn’t follow rules.
The rapping is decent. Don’t love the voice and the flow is definitely not super fluid but he finds a groove somewhere in there.

Artist: B-nice
song: Not let we think

The rapper is definitely good. That’s the first thing that jumps out to me. Decent voice and a nice flow. There’s some room for improvement but he’s got something. The beat is cool but better on paper than in it’s execution. Typically, a cool piano loop and a crunchy break would always work but, I dunno, the loop is kinda atonal. Still, it’s all well made. Good stuff all around.

Artist: Agent or Angel
Song: In the end

I was with this until the drums came in. That was a huge let down. In fact, you redo this entire thing with different drums (be it hard breaks or just better electronic sounds) it will improve tenfold. As it stands now, it sounds like an undone track with the current drums just holding place for something better. Most of the musical aspects are solid though. I’d take this one back to the lab and polish it up. It’s got potential.

Artist: DJ Ph03NiX
Song: Albatross

Why anyone would send me house music is beyond me. Like, come on, dude. I have no capacity to review this let alone even listen to it. I’m sitting in my bed with a laptop and headphones on, not taking molly at ibiza. So, yeah…please don’t ever send me shit like this. Thanks.
Also, the way the artist spells his name made me wanna punch my computer screen.

Song: The way she goes Ft. Halos12

The rapping has a breathless macklemore-ishness to it. Not exactly my favorite style but the kids seem to like it so good on ya, bro! It definitely reminds me of the preachy nerd rap of my younger years. So, clearly, I’m no stranger to this kinda song.
The beat is cool. Well put together and a nice mix of samples and synthy kinda shit.

Artist: Mindscape
song:Classic Rap tapes

This is a case of a voice/flow not being able to stand up to the intensity of a beat. The beat comes in strong. I could see a younger Jay-z killing this or Black Thought doing an effortless 64 bar verse over this. But this dude just doesn’t carry a beat like those guys. He’s not bad but he’s also not quite there yet. He sounds a little sheepish. It’s ironic that he says “Your energy doesn’t match what you speak” cause that’s true of this song. The beat though…I like it a lot.

Artist: Versace Taco X Lamborghini thirsty
Song: Finna get the hamma

This post Riff Raff rap.
Okay, i never watched “Home improvement” so a lot of the humor of this is lost on me. Also, trappy british dudes sounds ridiculous. But i think that’s the point. This is obviously joke raps so I really don’t know how to rate it. They did a good job making one of “these” type of beats though.

  1. i like phonoreason. sounds like a mixture between sole and common. synth is cool. vocals could be turned up a bit and he could put a little more bass in his voice.
