Demo Reviews Vol. 71

Welcome once again to the not so wonderful world of Demo reviews. Stranger send me their music so i can give my worthless opinion on it. Why not?
I’m still accepting submission but you must real these RULES before sending me anything. Can’t stress the importance of those rules, bro! A few people this week clearly just grazed over them.
Anyway, the way this works is that I listen to the demo once, write a paragraph or two about it and then arbitrarily rate the songs from 1-10 in these categories:
Production
Vocals
Listenability
Originality

That’s about that. Keep your chin up. I’m not doing this to make you famous or to make you feel bad. I’m just being honest.

artist: Rootamus
Song: Blind Faith

This is a well made track. The beat isn’t incredibly interesting but it’s put together very nicely and it sounds professional.
The rapper is solid and has a cool voice that I think will get better as he keeps evolving. Kinda reminds me of a much more mellow Lakutis. His flow is interesting cause it’s almost simple but he does find some interesting pattern within that style.
Not too shabby.
Production:5.5 out of 10
Vocals:5.5 out of 10
Listenability:6 out of 10
Originality:4 out of 10

Artist: Koolsamarkand
Song: Danger

This is okay I guess. It’s more a beat than a song. It’s got some little nuances here and there but overall needs more to it for me to consider it an actual track.
The drums are kind quiet and the “danger” sample is in the song way too long Drops! Peaks! Valleys! These are the the things that turn a beat into an actual song.
Production:4.5 out of 10
Vocals:n/a
Listenability:5 out of 10
Originality:4 out of 10

Artist: Son of 021
Song: The sound of sound

Okay listen…I think we need to have a refresher course on what is and isn’t a song. You made a beat. Just like the guy above you. It’s not a bad beat. It’s fine. But that’s all it is. I know the feeling of finishing a beat and being proud of it. you want people to hear it. But, please, for the sake of this column, don’t send me shit like that. I was music that stands alone as a song. Vocals are nice. If it has to be instrumental, it needs to go somewhere. These “loop, drums and slight alteration” tracks are not songs. Not even close. They may one day be songs, but until then, I don’t want to hear them.
Production:4.5 out of 10
Vocals:n/a
Listenability:4 out of 10
Originality:2 out of 10

Artist:Theeatrics
Song: Tuney Loons

I like the spirit of this one. It’s a decent idea and it’s well executed. Where it falls short is the actual beat and raps. Neither are bad but they aren’t great either. But, like I said, i think they’re onto something so keep moving forward. On a technical note, the kicks are peaking and that sounds like tiny farts.
Production:4.5 out 10
Vocals:5 out of 10
Listenability:4.5 out of 10
Originality:5 out of 10

Artist: Jayajamin & lyan rang
song: Luagh like that

Hmmm…Folk rap is hard to pull off. The uncluded are pretty much where it begins and ends. There’s an audience for this. I’m not part of that audience.
This is terrible it’s just some shit I can’t take too seriously.
Production:4.5 out of 10
Vocals:4 out of 10
Listenability:4 out of 10
Originality:4.5 out of 10

Artist: Supranatural
song: Visuals

This kinda music makes me feel old. Like i bet these guys are way cooler than I am but I also bet I wouldn’t wanna be in a room with them for more than 5 minutes. So much neon!
as a song, I don’t like the beat but it’s well enough made. Same with the rapping. The guy can flow but it’s just not interesting to me, personally. Also, the way the song is arranged is a touch all over the place. I feel a song like this should have a tight sequencing cause that’s part of the point of music like this.
Production:5 out of 10
Vocals:5 out of 10
Listenability:4 out of 10
Originality:4 out of 10

Artist: Mr Durden and The modest one
Song: Goons of the night

This is a real haunted house of a song. It’s scary. The vocals make my ears hurt and the beat is shrill as fuck. It’s all about how it was recorded and the effects used. It’s what headaches are made of. This is one of those “I dare you to listen to me!” kinda song. Well, I do not accept your dare.
Production:3.5 out of 10
Vocals:4.5 out of 10
Listenability:3 out of 10
Originality:5 out of 10

Artist: QM & Ben Waid
Song: I shoula been a surfer

Man, this week makes me miss samples…
That said, I like the rapping on this. Reminds me of being in the bay area with my nieces and nephews. I don’t like the beat much but it’s got a nice west coast gangster vibe to it. Like, if Vince Staples used it, I’d be okay with it. But as good as these guys are, they aren’t Vince staples.
Production:4.5 out of 10
Vocals:5.5 out of 10

Demo Reviews Vol. 70

REM-demo-tape-007
Hi there. welcome to another edition of “demo reviews”. You sent them, so i will give you my honest opinion. If you would live to submit a demo, I’m keeping the doors open. But first, you MUST READ THIS. It’s the rules for submitting and they need to be followed closely.
Anyway, the reviews work like so: I listen to your song, write a paragraph or two about it , then arbitrarily rate it from 1-10 in these categories
Production
Vocals
Listenability
Originality

that’s about it. Good luck and godspeed!

Artist: Jay-Free
Song: In this bitch

You know, when I started doing demo reviews, this is the kinda song i expected on a regular basis. Sadly, I haven’t gotten many. It’s terrible but kinda lovable. He’s pretty funny but he can’t rap at all on serious level and the beat is total trash. Still, there is something about this that makes me smile.
Production:3 out of 10
Vocals:4 out of 10
Listenability:5.5 out of 10
Originality: 3.5 out of 10

Artist:Tyme MC
Song: Ghosts Feat. Gabriella Moxey

This rapper does that emo breathless style that I truly loath. Like he’s about to cry but, to hold it in, he’s breathing extra.
The main loop is kinda cool. The drums are barely there, though I think that’s on purpose.
The hook fits the mood. This kind of sad rap story song just bores me at this point. It’s not even badly done though. It’s just a type of song I tend to turn off after 8 bars.
Production:4.5 out of 10
Vocals:4.5 out of 10
Listenability:4.5 out of 10
Originality:4 out of 10

Artist: Sporasia
Song: Waiting for you

Is it sad demo day? This is a slightly less refined version of the previous song. It’s very “demo” sounding. Everything about it, from the beat to the recording is very amateur.
This needs a ton of polish. The rapper has some potential but it feels like it’s a long way off.
Production:4 out of 10
Vocals:4 out of 10
Listenability:4.5 out of 10
Originality:4 out of 10

Artist:Dope Knife
song: Dienasty

This song is polished. I like the beat. I’m not sure if that static sound is supposed to be in there but it’s kind of annoying. The rapping is nothing if not confidant. He has some good lines and some that made me wince. regardless, this is a nice departure from all the sad rap i’ve heard thus far today.
Production:5.5 out of 10
Vocals:5 out of 10
Listenability:5 out of 10
Originality:4.5 out of 10

Artist: TDYRX
Song: EnJ&Kush

The beat is dope. especially impressed with the rhodes layering. Definitely has an older vibe to it but I’m cool with that. The rapper is solid but his voice isn’t really great. It’s not bad either though, just kinda generic.
Overall, this is solid.
Production:6 out of 10
Vocals: 5 out of 10
Listenability: 5.5 out of 10
Originality:3 out of 10

Artist: Freedom A.D.
Song: DEXWAVE

Yeah this is not for me. This is bondage club background music. Made to confuse and annoy.
I got no time or taste for this kinda thing. Rest assured though, anyone who’s into this kind of thing has had crazy thing shoved in their asses.
Production:3 out of 10
Vocals:N/a
Listenability: 1 out of 10
Originality:4 out of 10

Artist:Bed Head
song: Maiden China

First off, this is super quiet. Maybe turn your recording levels up, bro.
Outside of that, it’s like electronic jazz/fusion? Not sure what’s really going on. It’s not terrible, I just don’t really get what it’s trying to be. The drums are just kinda there. The instrumentation has some cool parts though. Too much meandering. It just seems kinda self involved.
Production:4 out of 10
Vocals:n/a
Listenability:4 out of 10
Originality:4.5 out of 10

Artist: ENxVE
Song:003

Smooth piano loop for sure. Don’t like the drums but they don’t ruin it. The rapper is pretty good. He sounds like a throw back to the mid 90’s underground rap, which is both good and bad. Like, I legit could have heard this in 95 on the stretch and bobbito show when they played demos. And I woulda liked it then. 20 years later? it’s good but nothing I haven’t heard before.

Demo Reviews Vol. 69 (now accepting Submissions!)

2093
Whattup everyone…It’s the moment all the self loathers have been waiting for! I’m opening up the flood gates once again for demo submissions. If you have a song you’d like me to review, now is your time to both shine and possibly get shit on as well. However, before you just submit me something. There are rules. PLEASE READ THESE CLOSELY BEFORE SUBMITTING ANYTHING TO ME. They are crucial to your demo even making it to the review process.
1)The header on the email must say “Demo review”
2)If you’ve already submitted, DO NOT submit again. You had your fun now it’s other people’s turn. This includes producers working with new rappers.
3)Send me ONE SONG. Pick your song that is your favorite or the one that best exemplifies your music and shoot it over here. I’m not going to listen to your whole ep.
4)This time around, I’ll only be accepting songs that can be heard via a link. So, no loose mp3′s or myspace pages. I want soundcloud, bandcamp or you can even upload it to an upload site (like divshare.com, hulkshare ect…) that allows the songs to stream. Basically, the streaming part is crucial. If this is something you cannot do, you probably shouldn’t be sending me music in the first place. I also accept youtube video links but, seriously, how you gonna have that be your only form of streaming music online. Soundcloud is free. just sign up and put a song up there.
5)Demo MUST contain original production. I don’t want mixtapes of you rapping over other peoples tracks. I want actual songs. About once a week, I review something only to find out it’s some rare madlib track the person jacked. If you send me something, I want it to 100% be made by you. Sampling is sampling but taking another person finished rap beat and calling it your own is not okay.
6)budding producers: don’t just send me some random beat you made. I want a finished product. If your shit is called “Untitled beat” I will throw it right in the trash. If you made a beat but it’s just drums and a loop, i don’t want it. i want something you’d consider a song that can stand on it’s own. A rap beat with a subtle change does not a song make.

That’s about it for the rules. But there’s more…You must also accept that I will be reviewing your music honestly. I don’t know you. You aren’t my homeboy. I may write some shit you don’t wanna hear/accept. Just know it’s possible you will not be happy with the review. Butthurt responses will be clowned on properly. Trust me, I’m as familiar with internet criticism as any person who makes music for a living. It sucks but it’s part of the deal. After all, you’re sending me your music so I can review it. what else do you expect? By submitting, you’re pretty much agreeing to possibly being let down.
It should also be noted that , genre wise, I’m a rap guy. I like rap music. This can work both for and against you people sending me rap as I will be highly critical of it but there’s also a chance I might actually like it. If it were up to me, I’d ONLY review rap demos. Where as with other genres (particularly instrumental music and electronic type shit) I don’t really listen to that kinda stuff. Feel free to send it but just know my ceiling of enjoyment for that kind of music is typically pretty low. Ironic, I know…but it’s the reality of things.

Got it? good.
So, send away to my email
phatfriendblog@gmail.com.
I’m gonna keep the submission progress open for about a week so you have ample time to get your shit together.
Good luck and godspeed.

All that said, here’s this weeks batch.
Don’t forget to vote for your favorite at the bottom.

Artist: Mr Ramos
Song: World’s Honey

This is pretty interesting. It’s not every day you hear digeredoo utilized. I like the vibe and the girl is a solid enough singer (not exactly showing much range) but the song doesn’t really go anywhere. It’s the same thing the whole time. I’m assuming it’s some sort of Hari Krishna prayer type shit though so maybe they don’t believe in hooks.
Production wise, it isn’t exactly amazing but it fits the song nicely.
Production:5.5 out of 10
Vocals:5 out of 10
Listenability:5 out of 10

Artist:Mic Trill
Song:Mr. Tidor

I wanna just say that I hate those ominous bells people keep putting on their songs. It’s been happening since Tupac and I hated it back then too. Just a random thought….
This is one of those beats that’s totally fine but not my thing at all. It’s dark! It’s ominous! Bells!
People love this kinda shit though so what do I know.
The rapper is okay. His voice doesn’t really match the kind of production but I’m not mad at him. He definitely sounds like he’s lacking a hair of confidence. That can be fixed easily though with a little time.
Production:4.5 out of 10
Vocals:5 out of 10
Listenability:4.5 out of 10
Originality:4.5 out of 10

Artist: Louis Mackey and Thirtyseven
song: Can’t seem to make you mine

This beat is very dope. Simple but effective. Dope loops, subtle changes and solid drums. It’s not exactly very creative but it’s well done for sure.
The rapping is solid too. There’s nothing particularly special about either of the rappers but they’re both skilled and very comfortable on the mic. This whole thing kinda reminds me of some early 2000’s indie shit.
Production:5.5 out of 10
Vocals:5.5 out of 10
Listenability:6 out of 10
Originality:3 out of 10

Artist: George Peterson
Song: Fresh Eggs Ft. Professor Plum

Wow. Hahahahaa…the rapping in this amazing. It’s like uncomfortable weird Al or telly from “Kids” but nerdier. I’m trying to figure out what’s going on here. It’s incredible. It sounds like it was recorded in three different rooms.
This is the kinda thing that, if my friends and I happened upon in 2000, we’d listen to it over and over , at first to make fun of it but, eventually, we’d all be obsessed with it and it would be the source of endless inside jokes. It’s awful but in a fantastic way.

Artist: Reklooze witherspoons
song: The early showings of a vedic mindstate

THis is some stoned out jazzy shit. I think it’s a little boring but it’s well done and definitely could fit all sorts of moods. Most of which consists of being way too high while on a couch. I’m not mad at it. It feels like it needs more elements to really work as a song but all the parts are nicely meshed together. It’s WAY too long though.
Sode note: I hate the song title, and I didn’t even bother typing out the whole thing. Who are you, bro? Fiona Apple?
Production:5.5 out of 10

Artist:SoCro
Song: Goodbye

This is an interesting blending of different styles that doesn’t really work for me. Trappy drums, yell singing, then drake-ish sing rapping. It seems like it’s trying to do a lot of things at once without committing to anything. It’s not poorly made. In fact, it’s actually really well produced. The vocalist doesn’t do anything for me and the hook sounds like something Eminem would do that might end up on a commercial for the army.
I appreciate what the dude is attempting though.
Production:6.5 out of 10
Vocals:4 out of 10
Listenability:4.5 out of 10

Artist: MC Stan
Song: Animal House

I’m am staunchly anti-Green day quoting in rap but I’ll let it slide. The rapper is good. He hits some corny moments here and there but , overall, he sounds good. Definitely way more comfortable with a double time flow cause, sometimes, when he slows it down, the flow loosens up a little too much.
The beat is just kinda there. I honestly can’t even really hear whats going on.
Production:4 out of 10
Vocals:5 out of 10
Listenability:5 out of 10

Artist: Company
Song: Kako je Tamo?

This is a mellow , slow burn of a track. I like it. It’s well made and well recorded. It’s very tasteful. I don’t love when people use too many vocal samples (talking, not singing) but that’s really my only complaint. Definitely a “driving home at 5 am” kinda song. i assume…I don’t drive.

Demo reviews vol. 68

6a00d83452989a69e20120a942f7e5970b-800wi Hi there and welcome to another edition of “Demo reviews”. You people sent me your music so I could sit on my throne and tell you what I think. It’s not really fair and I have no better opinion that the next guy but, hey, you asked for it so here it is. I’m not currently accepting submissions but, when I am, I’ll announce it. Keep an eye out for that, all budding musicians who might wanna get taken down a peg. Anyway, this section works like so: i write a paragraph or two about the song then arbitrarily rate it from 1-10 in these categories Production Vocals Listenability Originality That’s it. This weeks batch is actually pretty decent all around. Which is nice cause it makes me hate doing this a little less. Artist:Funky Kobe Song: Spacing out While this is nothing I’d ever really sit down and listen to I’m not mad at it all. In fact, of all the live instrument songs I’ve ever gotten this is easily the best one. It’s a jazzy free for all. Smooth, well arranged and the players are all solid. This would kill at a hippie music festival. Production:7 out of 10 Vocals:n/a Listenability:6 out of 10 Originality:5 out of 10 Artist: Skope Mc Song: Black and white It’s no secret I don’t love most rap I hear coming from places outside of North America. In the case of this song, it’s not so much the accent or the language but the flow. Dude is kinda all over the place. Sounds like a BBC news anchor reading the news to a beat. Only thing I can compare it to is The Streets (yeah, my knowledge of UK rap is that thin) and I never liked The Streets. Also, there’s something strange about hearing british dude rap about USA based cop/minority relations. It’s not bad, just weird. The Production is not bad but also kinda grating at times. Production:4.5 out of 10 Vocals:4 out of 10 Listenability:4 out of 10 Originality:4.5 out of 10 Artist: Cap’n Cook Song: Loose ends This guy hashtagged “Calms casino” on his song, which makes me think this is a Clams Casino beat. It makes sense, cause it’s a dope beat. It also pisses me off cause one of the first rules of demo reviews is to not use other peoples beats. I want all original material. So, if someone knows this to be a clams casino beat, lemme know. I’mma review as it’s an original just to be fair… So, yeah, it’s a really good beat. Airy. HEAVILY Clams influenced. Dope drums, nice progressions. Well done, if this is indeed your beat. Production:7.5 out of 10 Vocals:n/a Listenability:7 out of 10 Originality:3 out of 10 Artist: Illumneye crew song: Skyfall  Nice production. Sounds like a sample I’d use. It’s well mixed and clean over all. I appreciate the change ups. It’s crucial to a song with 3 rappers on it. The rapping is solid but not incredibly interesting. None of them are wack but none of them are really making me want to check any more of the music. This is probably the kinda rap group I would have been in now if I was 20 years younger and rapped. So don’t feel bad. Production:6 out of 10 Vocals:5 out of 10 Listenability:5.5 out of 10 Originality:3.5 out of 10 Artist: Approach Song:S.P.S.9 I was ready to hate this beat when it started. The synth sounds set off all sorts of red flags but it actually is not bad. This is pretty much as good as you can make this kinda beat sound. Tastefully done. The rapping starts off a little slow but, by the end, I was into it. His slight speech impediment actually adds some character to it. Not bad at all. Production:6 out of 10 Vocals:5.5 out of 10 Listenability:6 out of 10 Originality:4.5 out of 10 Artist: Jepein song: smoik fralle pax Slow plodding synth track. It does what it’s supposed to do but it’s not anything I’d ever wanna replay. It would make a decent movie score though. It’s not badly made at all. In fact, it’s quite well done. But, yeah, I don’t know what to with this kinda song. Drive down a dark road to it? Is that a genre? It probably should be. Production:6 out of 10 Vocals:n/a Listenability:5 out of 10 Originality:4.5 out of 10 Artist: Endemic MC Song: Endemic to the music I kinda like this guys voice. It’s got that white voice problem but it somehow works. He’s got presence. So that’s good.It certainly helps carry what are otherwise not exceptional rhymes. The hook is corny but , hey, what can you do? The beat is not very good. It’s well mixed and the drums are good but every musical element is just not enjoyable. It’s not atonal but it might as well be. Production:4 out of 10 Vocals:5.5 out of 10 Listenability:4.5 out of 10 Originality:4.5 out of 10 Artist: Byron Hyperion Song: Ethereal Demise THis has the sound of somehow who’s been doing beats for a few years and is just on the verge of finding their sound…but they’re not quite there yet. It’s not bad it’s just kinda boring. The talent is there though. I’d bet , in a year, this person will be making infinitely better music. So that’s good. Production:4.5 out of 10 Vocals:n/a Listenability:4.5 out of 10 Originality:4.5 out of 10 So, what do you think?

th

Hi there! Welcome to another edition of “Demo Reviews”. You people sent me your music to critique and that’s exactly what I do. You asked for this. I am not responsible for you’re fragile ego so please take what I say with a pinch of salt.
I’m not accepting demo’s at the moment so please don’t send me any. When I am, I will announce it. You will have ample time to submit , just not anytime soon.
Anyway, the reviews work like so: I write a paragraph or two about the song then arbitrarily rate it 1-10 in these categories:
Production
Vocals
Listenability
Originality

That’s about it. Let’s peep this weeks batch.

Artist:Elephant is the?
Song: Ricky Bobby

This is one of those songs that has a personality but everything else about is pretty hard to sit through. The rapper has good presence and good voice. He’s not great at rapping but those two qualities can carry an mc. The beat, however, is really bad. Not only does it just sound cheap and flimsy, it’s literally annoying to listen to so. That high pitch sound in particular is super grating.
Production:2 out of 10
Vocals:5 out of 10
Listenability:3 out of 10
Originality:4 out of 10

Artist:Norkus
Song: Veisalgia

I don’t mind this beat at first. I like the ideas it tries to pull off later in the track but I just don’t know if it works particular well. It sounds too cluttered. There is certainly good ideas in it though. it just needs the execution to be ironed out a little better. The rapper is pretty average. He’s just kinda there. He doesn’t have a commanding voice that asks for much attention.
Production:4.5 out of 10
Vocals:4.5 out of 10
Listenability:4.5 out of 10
Originality:4.5 out of 10

Artist: Second Class Citizen
Song: Here comes the sun

This is a good mixture of old trip hop sounds with a much more current sounding instrumental music. The drums hit like some old 1998 shit but the sample and synth work is definitely not trapped in the past. I like it. Not a ton of stuff happens it but it stands as a song very nicely. Well done.
Production:7 out of 10
Vocals:n/a
Listenability:6.5 out of 10
Originality:5 out of 10

Artist: Microphone Jones
Song: The Prestige Ft. Fast4ward & Mike Boogie

This beat is well made but, musically, kinda corny to me. It makes sense cause the song is corny. I’m willing to bet this artist has a song or two that would be more up my alley but they choose this one. Emo love joints…not my thing. The rapper is decent enough but, you know, he’s rapping about love and crap. But, like I said, the beat is well done and I can’t front on that at all. This song is more for girls and there’s nothing wrong with that…but I am a man.
Production:5.5 out of 10
Vocals:5 out of 10

Artist: Noumenon
Song: Spasm

This title is fitting. It’s spazzy. It’s also kinda just one part with a few subtle layers. Not much too this and the main part isn’t exactly enjoyable. I always wonder when I hear tracks like this. How they even got finished based of that one main part. It’s just not even remotely a strong enough foundation to build an entire track off of.
Production:4 out of 10

Artist: Worshiprr
song: Visually arresting god

This is music that makes me feel like I’m simply too old to “get” it. Like, to my ears, this makes no sense. It’s a long drawn out build up to a whole lot of “who cares?”. It’s too tinny and , tonally, it just seems off.
That said, I bet there are a bunch of people in their early 20’s who think I’m crazy for saying all those things.
Production:3.5 out of 10

Listenability:3.5 out of 10

Artist:Luggage benFM Oxen
Song: Cherokaa PArks Ft. Doug Mule

This is kind of J-zone-ish to me, beat wise. The mix is a little bass heavy. Turn the bass down and Turn the drums up a little. So, you know, the beat is almost good.
The rapping is entertaining but not that great. I do love the old basketball references. Vocally, there are high points and low points. it just feels uneven. admittedly, that could be cause the beat makes it seem that way.
Production:4.5 out of 10
Vocals:5 out of 10
Listenability:5 out of 10
Originality:4.5 out of 10

Artist: Mister Yo
Song: You’re wide open

So there’s a story behind this. A couple months ago someone sent me this to make fun of in my “This week in ridiculous rap” column. While I could have, i felt it was more bad than ridiculous. Then, i get this submitted for demo reviews, assuming it was the same dude playing a joke. Turns out it wasn’t. It was the actual guy. Weird. Anyway, this sounds like it was recorded over a burner phone and , while the rapper does say some funny shit, he can’t rap…at all. Like rhythm is NOT the dancer on this one. Points for being a total weirdo though. I do give it high points for listenabilty though cause it is kind of fascinating.

Planet Hemp - Fita-Demo
Spring is upon us and Demo reviews stop for no one. Yes, it’s back! Tell your friends!
For those who don’t know, this is a column where readers send me their music to critique. No clue why , as the results are rarely good for either parties but I guess it’s a good way to get your music heard on a very small level. It’s pretty basic. I listen to a song, write a paragraph of two about it, then arbitrarily rate them from 1-10 in these categories:
Production

Oh, and I’m not accepting submissions at the moment, so don’t send me any. I’ll let you guys know when I re-open that up.
This week actually has a few decent moments. As well as the typical not so decent moments.
Enjoy and vote to tell me which one was your favorite.

Artist:I also we
Song: Null and sleep

This is an odd starting point. Not the typical genre I get. Not a genre I’d normally listen to. I can say it sounds like an unpolished version of something that could be good. That said, the singer is struggling a little. This is almost good. Some good ideas but, over all, the amateurishness of it is overwhelming.

Artist: Paradoxical
Song: Junk Food

I like this beat. It’s some mellow jazzy shit. Reminds me of some late 90’s indy 12″ I might have had on a mixtape. That’s just the beat though. The rapping is not very good. From voice, to presence to lyrics and flow it’s just not there. You can tell it’s being read and the rapper just sounds kinda uncomfortable.

Song: Sunlight

This dude sounds like dr. Dre. Weird. I’m fucking with this on some levels. I like the samples and the variations of the beat. The drums suck though. Like, scrap them completely and start over completely cause the rest of the music is solid. The rapper is okay. He’s got a good voice but his flow is very normal and not very exciting.

Song: Verbal Columbine pt. 2

Who could ever forget Verbal Columbine part 1? The streets have been waiting for this!
just kidding.
This is some “barz” shit. The thing about “Barz” it that they’re typically boring as fuck and empty. These guys can rap pretty well. Nothing they say is particularly interesting or original but they have the strong skill set. Some more than others.
The hook is terrible. It sounds very….floridian. The beat is some trappy synths shit that isn’t really my bag. I think it’s a decently made version of that genre so it’s more a personal taste thing.

This is interesting. Very drowsy and spaced out. I really like the production and the vocals are a nice compliment. I can visualize a teenaged girl listening to this in her bedroom while crying so that’s a good start. The only downside I see it that it lacks a direction. The meandering works but, i dunno, tighten up that song structure.

Song: Next door (ft. Lucki Eck$)

Is this being rapped in english? Oh wait..it is. Took me a minute.
I like the production and the rapper , as slurry and unintelligible as he is, is pretty good. This is music made for a younger generation than mine. I’m not mad at it and see a lot of potential. This is a person who fucks with lots of drake and young thug. His comfort on the mic is palpable though.
The beat is understated but very well done.

Artist: Rhizome
Song: Naoko

I think we can stop the pitch bending vocal thing if you’re not Sparkmaster tape, lil ugly mane or captain murphy.
This is a pretty good beat but the vocals are mixed/recorded so badly it’s kinda hard to listen to. I can tell the rapper is kinda meh but not terrible. When the rapping stops, the beat shines a bit though. There are some kinks that need ironing out here but , at the very least, there’s potential here on some level.

Song: Messy Man

The white voice is painful on this one. I know we can’t control that but, goddamn…he has the voice of an accountant or a poetry professor. Outside of the voice, his flow and lyrics are a very certain type. Competent but not particularly enjoyable.
The beat is a bit noisy for my taste. It’s not terribly made but it definitely lacks a real mood that the listener can embrace.

Demo Reviews vol. 65

Scan 1
Hi there. Welcome to another edition of demo reviews. I’m your host, Blockhead. This is where I listen to music sent in by blog readers and tell them what I think. It’s a good way to get an honest option from someone who doesn’t know and/or doesn’t really care.
I’m not an easy audience but everyone who sent in music was warned so, don’t feel bad for anyone here. They knew what they were getting into.
The reviews work like so: I write a paragraph or two about the song then arbitrarily rate them from 1-10 in these categories

That’s about it. Let’s see what we got this week and don’t forget to vote at the end for your favorite demo. This is a contest where all you win is pride.

Artist: Paulie Rhyme
Song: Super String Theory

The beat is pretty dope…probably cause Blueprint made it. I have sneaking suspicion this was purchased from my buddy print on some “I’m selling blueprint beats!” shit. i could be wrong but it feels like that. I gotta say, I’m not a fan of when people send me songs with beats by producers who are already established. This isn’t his demo. He’s proven. But ,hey, it is what it is I guess.
The rapping is capable but, ultimately , uninteresting. Overall, the song isn’t bad at all, it’s just not something that sticks out much.

Song: Showdown with the showgun top off

If you were to ask me what the average underground rapper sounds like in 2004, I’d point you to this song. To be clear, this guy is not bad at rapping. He’s totally fine at rapping, actually. But he’s got an average voice, average presence, and there’s nothing drawing me in. It’s the subtly whiney white voice (though , his voice is not even remotely as bad as the average “white voice” plagued rapper) Also, that hook is pretty corny.
The beat is okay. I like the break used on the drums. Overall, It’s a little boring.
On a technical level, the vocals have an effect on them that makes them sound kinda thin. I’d remove that effect on future songs.

Song: Anyway how

This is a mellow little jam. It’s consistently builds as it goes. It kinda sounds like something that might be playing in a movie while it showed someone wistfully skipping rocks off a pond. So, perhaps its genre is “wistful-step”?
It’s perfectly fine though. I don’t have a problem with this.

The has a nice summery feel to it. The main sample chop is a little clunky (could use some effects on it to make it flow more fluidly) but the beat is cool. It reminds me of an earlier era in rap.
The rapper is pretty good. Not really saying anything ground breaking but I don’t think that’s the point of a song like this. I hear potential beyond this for sure.
Also, it’s pretty rare I get southern rappers here so this was a welcome change to my ears.

Song: Call him a rapper

Within two seconds of the beat starting I was like “mmm…nope”. It’s the drum sounds. It’s the synth sounds. It’s the bass line. It’s just mood-less and uninteresting. It’s not until the horn comes in halfway where a tone is even established. After that, it picks up a little but it’s still sounds like a skit made by a beginner , due to the choice of sounds used. There are some good ideas going on here (after the mid point) though. It just needs a whole lot of refinement.

This is pretty much some noodling on his guitar with an effect on it, over drums. It’s certainly got a vibe and I could see someone enjoying this (a hippie), but it’s not for me. It just kind meanders and never ends up anywhere. But isn’t that the point of jammy songs like this?

Sigh…Okay, this beat is cool. Nice loop and the drums are pretty decent. Here’s the thing though…can you guess what I’m gonna say?
I DON’T SPEAK SPANISH. As always, when sent rap in foreign languages, it’s nothing personal but if I can’t understand the words, there’s no point for me. I actually value that part of rap. There are people who can listen to some rap in a language they don’t understand and just go off the vibe…I’m not that guy. So, I really don’t even know how to review shit like this beyond the beat.

This is a well done emo rap joint. I’m not mad at it. It’s emotive and the rhymes are very personal, without making me cringe due to corny over-sharing. There’s still work to be done for the rapper but he’s tapped into something that can definitely be built off. This reminds me of earls new album in a weird way.
The beat is simple and effective. Kinda hard to really review a beat with no drums but, hey, when it works, it works.

Demo reviews vol. 64 (NOW ACCEPTING SUBMISSIONS)!

??????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????

It pretty rough at times. I’m not even gonna lie.
Don’t forget to vote for your favorite at the bottom.

Artist: Wally Clark
Song: Hibiscus

This is some pimped out spoken word poetry. Now, I pretty much hate most spoken word. That’s just me though. That said, this doesn’t bother me. It’s pretty entertaining, actually. The beat seems like just a loop but there might be some live instruments. I honestly can’t tell. My money is on a straight loop. If so, pretty lazy guys. But , I can’t front, it’s effective.

I don’t know what to say about this other than it’s kind of a mess. The change ups make no sense. It sounds like someone throwing everything at the wall and seeing sticks. Then it flips up into a totally different beat that has nothing to do with any other part. It’s tonally a disaster. Yeah…this has a lot of problems.

Sigh…I’ve got slight issues with this tonally but , more than anything, this just seems kind of like some middle of the road sounds slapped together. It definitely improves as it goes on but it’s still pretty amateur sounding. The drums and plug in’s are just not doing it for me. To be fair, this is also a genre (what the hell genre is this?) that I have zero interest in so I’m clearly not the target audience.

This one is hard to classify. There’s rap but he’s kinda singing. He sort of sounds like
the Linkin Park guy in the beginning. Later, he raps normal and it improves things. Not great but there’s some potential there.
The beat is pretty shoddy. It’s just not mixed well and the drums sounds are odd. The changes are a little iffy tonally.
I will say that both the rapper and the producer are headed in the right direction though. Perhaps stop trying to do so much and focus more of simplicity. Rapper, just rap. Producer, just make a less intricate beat. Save the more complicated stuff for when you’re technical skill catches up with your ideas.

I love the opening loop. It got me excited for the song. Then , the filters come in and kinda killed it. I get the idea but it doesn’t really work cause the bass line is so thin. They would almost be better off just not filtering it.
The rapping is okay. Not bad at all cause both guys can flow and have good voices. Not exactly interesting either but, let’s be honest, comparatively, it’s a breath of fresh air in these demo reviews.

If I know your sample off the bat, it’s not a good sign. The guitar loop from Eternal sunshine is cool but it’s been done. If I ignore that, this is kinda cool, ethereal and glitchy. I wouldn’t mind more to happen with the drums. The ones in there currently sound like placeholders. Overall, It’s a decent start but it needs more work.

Was this produced by drunken keyboard cat?
This is a total mess on every level. The beat is REALLY bad. Bad sounds, tonally off, bad drums.
The rapping isn’t much better. If this was a performance art piece I might give it a little room to breath but none of these people should be releasing music into the ether at this point. That doesn’t mean they shouldn’t at some point but there are so many kinks to iron out at this point, they need to go back to the lab and serious reevaluate what they’re trying to achieve musically. points for originality though. Can’t say I heard songs like this…ever.

Before i even get into the music, you guys need a new mic and someone who can mix music. This is a shit show , sonically.
Outside of that, there is potential. The beat actual could be okay with some better engineering and if they remove that change that comes in around 1:00. That doesn’t work.
The rapping is decent. She definitely has something to say and I can appreciate that. Skill wise, she’s not quite there yet though. Sounds more like a writer than a rapper. That can improve over time though.

Demo Reviews Vol. 63

caset
Hi there and welcome to another edition of “Demo reviews”. Can’t say I’ve missed it much but the streets are calling. Well, that’s not ever true. The people who submitted demo’s are calling for it. I imagine the rest of you feel kinda like i do about this.
ANNNNYWAAAYYYY, this is where you guys send me demos and I review them. Why me? No clue. Probably cause I’m the only guy offering such services. The review work like so: I listen once, write a few thoughts down and then rate the songs from 1-10 in these categories:
Production
Vocals
Listenability
Originality

Those rating are pretty arbitrary so, you know, don’t read into them too much.
Okay? cool…this week is full of instrumental stuff, which I’m not crazy about in general but, hey, beggars can’t be choosers.

Artist: YY
Song: Brand new day

This is a moody little piece that would work very nicely as a film score. It’s well done but I personally don’t know what to do with music like this. It’s good but I can’t imagine ever finding a place to listen to it. Driving at night, maybe? Songs like this aren’t so much about the song itself and more about an overall mood. This certainly captures something though

Song: Veins…

This is interesting. On one hand, I think the production is sound and the song structure is nice. It’s a well made (and mixed) song. The vocals are iffy to me cause they aren’t really rapping…more spoken word poetry type shit (which I loath). But, clearly, this isn’t meant to be a rap song so I suppose judging it on those merits isn’t fair. But the talky rap style is a bit too kitty pryde for my taste.

Artist: WFM
Song: My Blocky head

The song title got me all sorts of “hmmm….”.
Well, this is just a beat with one extra layer. I’d say the best part is the drums. Other then that, it’s pretty uneventful and has that “forced emotional” feel to it.
Those kind of piano progressions tend to do that. Thing is, you can work with those if they’re a backbone of a song and not the featured part. I’d say, this song needs a lot more to it to be interesting.

Artist: Dr. Apple
Song: Big bang boogie

Honestly, it’s just nice to hear a rap song finally.
This is okay. The beat is a nice loop but the drums are pretty whatever. Not terrible but they coulda been the deciding factor for a song like this.
The rapper is decent. I like his voice and he says some pretty funny shit on here. My biggest gripe would be that he makes some unfortunate choices vocally. It’s not that big a deal but sometimes what separates a decent rapper from a good rapper is the nuance.

Song: Mellow Feet

Good drums with a jazz loop. It’s always an efficient way to get a beat started. It’s definitely not at all original but I certainly can’t knock the hustle. Thing is, i don’t really like the main loop. It’s got a mood but there’s a weird tone to it. It’s not out of key but it feels a little dissonant. And the changes/additions don’t do much to help that case. This beat is fine though…I dunno if I’d really call it a song.

I love mconan? Not really.
This is some electronic shit that just doesn’t appeal to me. The sounds are all kinda thin/stock sounds and musically it’s just kinda there. The drums are chaotic and don’t really match the mood of the music at all. That said, this is so out of my wheelhouse of musical interest, it could be great and i’d have no idea. It just sounds like a chaotic mess to me though.

Song: Contend the dark

This is a beat, bro. Not a song. Sure, you threw some vocal samples on it but..it’s a beat. The fact it’s on bandcamp is actually shocking as this sounds definitively like some soundcloud shit. Thing is, it’s not even a good beat. Like, if someone was rapping on it, I’d still be like “meh”. The sample is just boring and a little lazy. So, yeah, this one isn’t working for me.
As someone who samples everything, I gotta say, if you can’t find a good sample to loop, beat making might not be for you. it’s literally the easiest part of making tracks.

This is one of those tracks that feels like someone with potential just starting out. It hasn’t reached it’s fully formed stage yet. The sounds are all a tiny bit thin and the structure just isn’t there yet. But, like I said, I do see potential.

From the first note of this, I can tell that people who read this column will be all over it. Like this should win this week hands down. I don’t disagree. It’s a cool, choppy jazz loop with a drum style that’s still “in”. All that said, it’s literally just a few loops so this barely qualifies as a song. But it’s very well made…People really need to stop sending me these fucking beats and calling them songs. I WANT SONGS GODDAMNIT!

Demo Reviews Vol. 62

th
Well, it’s time for some More Demo reviews. You sent them in, I listened to them and gave you my opinion. For people curious of when and how they can send me demos hold your head. I’m not accepting demos right now. My queue is full. When the time comes, I will announce it and submissions will be open for a week or two. Till then, just wait and realize that not much good can come from me reviewing your demo anyway so it’s not a big deal.
Anyway, the reviews work like so- I write a paragraph or two about your demo then rate is from 1-10 in these categories
Production

Admittedly, the rating are pointless and don’t mean much. If you get over a 5, you should be happy. Just saying.
So, here are this week batch. A very “chill room” batch, if i ever got one.

Artist: Ray neal
Song: Prisoner’s Dilemma

This is mildly confusing, beat wise. It sounds like something you might hear in a hip hop haunted house. It’s not bad either, just a strange mood. I can’t really tell if I like it or not. It’s well done though. So that’s something. The rapping doesn’t really grab me. I don’t like his voice and there not much there that makes me wanna listen more. He sounds stressed out and white. That said, he’s not a bad rapper. It’s just not what I’m into.

Artist: Grape Juice Jones
Song: Dead horse

This sounds retro. Like it was recorded a long time ago. But I get the feeling that’s on purpose. The beat has it’s charm but, ultimately , it has some novice elements to it. I like the main part but all the synth layers that come in are a little corny to me.
The rapper is recorded badly but decent. After a while he kinda just fades into the back ground. There’s potential there though. Overall, i feel like this lacks focus.

Artist: Wundawa
Song: La Grande Raflesia

This is a cool little instrumental joint. It’s jazzy and glitchy and evolves nicely. It’s not exactly breaking new ground but it’s well done. My only critique would be the drums are not great but that could be fixed with a better mix.
Production:6 out of 10

Song: Rebirth of Mind

There are elements of this I like a lot. Mostly things that take place after the halfway mark. The switch up is cool. But this sounds like someone kinda figuring out their sound and equipment in front of our eyes. The potential is there but this sounds very “demo-ish”. Lacks polish.

Song: Remember Tomorrow

This is something you might hear in a hotel lobby or a at an EDM festival as the “come down” music they play at like 6 am to all the spun out people. Problem is, tonally, it’s kind of all over the place. Ever different part doesn’t really match very well with the next. That’s pretty problematic as music like this is supposed to be soothing and relaxing and, personally, when things sound out of key, that makes me anxious and uncomfortable.
Side note, i like the drums. They’re simple but cool sounds.

Song: Mutiny within the palace of eyes

I was gonna say this sounds like excellent music for a movie. Horror movies, in particular. Then the rapping started and I was like “oh…”. I like the beat as something creepy and atmospheric. It’s well made for sure. The rapping is whispery and uncomfortable but not in a good way. I dunno…it doesn’t sound like a rapper rapping. It sounds like a an emo goth rapping. Like, there’s no way this wasn’t recorded by candlelight. Which, I’m sure works for some people, just not me.

This is crisp. Everything sounds sharp and well recorded/mixed. It evolves nicely. I’m not sure what occasion this kinda song captures but it’s interesting. Not really for me, personally, but I can appreciate it for what it is. Synthy edm with some fairly hip hop drum sounds. The ending is actually my favorite part..

Song: When I look at you

This is okay. It doesn’t really make me feel strongly either way. It’s solidly made but, mood wise, it’s just kinda there. I’m not mad at it…but I’m also not crazy about it. It just…is.
